Josper in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018

In the days leading up to the grand gala of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards (held last night), Josper was present at the events and celebrations the only way we know how— in front of the oven and the Basque grill braising meat, fish and vegetables for hundreds of diners and guests of the event, and also sharing unique moments in a region that has given so much to the culinary world. The Basque Country, its cuisine and its heirs— Berasategui, Arzak, Subijana, Etxebarri, Azurmendi, and Mugaritz are now the best sign that there is still a long way to go, while always respecting the pioneers, their techniques and principles.

The Josper family congratulates all the cooks who are on this list and also those who are not, and who every day give the best of themselves in their trade. Thanks to all of them the dreams of many people are fulfilled, and as Massimo Bottura says, “Chefs and all the people of gastronomy are able to build a better world”.

Yesterday, the Euskalduna Palace in Bilbao had the highest concentration of culinary talent per square metre in the world. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants are the Oscars of cuisine with more than one hundred of the world’s most sought-after chefs, and some 350 journalists. And the celebration didn’t disappoint.

A highly competitive list in which every year there are ups and downs; where any small change can bring you up or down a spot. Thus, New York’s Eleven Madison Park fell to fourth place to allow the current number one, Osteria Francescana by chef Massimo Bottura (Modena, 1962), which held the top spot in 2016, to go up a spot. The Roca brothers with El Celler de Can Roca also went up a spot, and among the 50 best establishments there are seven Spanish restaurants (the largest presence of a single country), with three of them being among the top 10: Asador Etxebarri (10) and Mugaritz (9), in addition to Celler de Can Roca (2).

Josper is proud to learn from all of you.

Congrats to all!
